Miki is something of a wonder boy, He excels at fencing, he takes college level courses, despite being generally shy, he is quite popular, and he is the youngest member of the student council. More than this, he is a piano virtuoso, well known for a song he wrote—The Sunlit Garden. Still, he seeks something he calls his shining thing, and until he can find it, he will remain unfulfilled.

As a child, he used to play the piano with his twin sister Kozue in the garden. The two shared a special bound and the garden was their special place. Together they were brilliant, but Miki always believed she was the source of the beauty. They became quite popular and people wanted to see the young children perform, but Kozue was reluctant to do so. Miki insisted, promising to be there by her side, but he fell ill and she had to go on stage alone. For some reason she refused to play and would not speak for a long time. She never returned to the piano, and Miki thought he had ruined everything. He lost his inspiration and he spends his time trying to go back to that place where he was happy. In his mind, this is his “shining thing.”

In reality, Kozue could never play and only pretended to in order to impress a boy next door. Miki played so well that he hid all of her mistakes. Although she is very possessive of her brother, she also goes out of her way to hurt him. He longs to return to the bound they once shared, but is disgusted by her behavior.

At first Miki doesn’t seem inclined to duel. He has a crush on Anthy and he seems to like Utena. His crush turns into something more when he hears her playing the song he wrote for his sister. The beautiful music stirs his soul and he vows to protect it this time, believing he has found his shining thing. For a time, Utena convinces him that dueling for Anthy is wrong and he goes so far as to recommend that the council be dissolved. Touga replies that even if they were to dissolve the council, new duelists would be selected and the whole process would start again. If he wants to protect her music, he must win her in a duel.

Miki, much to Utena’s disappointment, challenges her to a duel. He honestly believes that winning the duel will ultimately help Anthy. He convinces himself that she wants him to fight for her so that she can continue to play the piano. Just when it looks like he is going to win, Anthy cheers for Utena, distracting him and giving Utena a chance to take his rose. He is crushed, having lost his shining thing yet again, until Anthy comes over to him and offers to play the piano for him. Although he tells Utena that they will duel again, the two become friends. He duels her again when Touga convinces him he must take what he wants (in this case Anthy) with his own two hands. He fails when his sister distracts him by trying to seduce Anthy during the duel.

Utena really likes Miki and admires his many talents. Miki seems to admire her as well and is closer to her then any of the other Student Council members.
